What is Maundy Thursday?
- “MAUNDY” COMES FROM THE LATIN mandatum meaning mandate, or command. The night before the cross Jesus met with the twelve disciples and said, “I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other” John 13:34.
- “THURSDAY,” REFERS TO THAT SAME NIGHT BEFORE JESUS WENT TO CROSS, the same night He was betrayed, the same night He took the bread and the wine and said “this is my body . . . this is my blood the token of God’s new covenant to save you–an agreement sealed with the blood I will pour out for you” Luke 22:19-20.
- “Maundy Thursday” reminds us of Jesus’ commandment to love one another, and celebrates Jesus inaugurating the “new covenant” with His own death and resurrection. We are reminded of that new commandment and the new covenant every time we take communion – every time we celebrate the Lord’s Table.
