Matthew 24:45-51

March 18, 2016 by Church Without Shoes

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Observation: It matters to Jesus what I do and say today, like right now.

Action: I’ll be mindful of doing what’s best right now. I’ll seek to make decisions in the moment to encourage others, leading them and me closer to the Kingdom of God.

Father, whatever we do today, let it be according to your will and glorify you. Help us to guard our minds, so we think Godly thoughts, especially toward others. Help us not to take your grace, love and gift of life for granted. Amen!

observation: You are saying I have something from You for your Oikos – Your family- household. Its not just any word a good word at the “proper time.”
action: You call me to be a believer, believing that what You have spoke to me is also for Your family. You call me to be a discerner, discerning the good word from you and seeing where it will best fit. You call me to be a steward, stewarding what You have given so I not only know the word from You but pass it on at the proper time. I will. I will not only remember this, but take this good word to others who think they don’t have anything of value for others and call them to hear again what You have spoke into their lives and pass that valuable content on in the context of someone’s life at just the right time. A good word at a good time makes you a faithful and wise servant of the king!

Observation: “…At the proper time.” God, you remind me this morning of Your provision for me now and in the past. You have always provided. It may not have been in the “time” I wanted, but it was, according to Your wisdom, in the proper time.

Action: When I am in need, God, help me to remember and trust Your timing.

Observation: Jesus describes the servants God is looking for as “wise and faithful”. They are not merely “not sinning” so they “go to Heaven when they die”. They are aware of what God is doing through His Kingdom and committed to participating in it.

Action: Lord Jesus, I want to be faithful and wise. So often I’ve taken this passage only as a warning to avoid Hell. Now I see it as an invitation to join You in Kingdom work. I will look for Kingdom opportunities today and will seize them when I see them.

Observation: There are areas of my life where I still say “My master is staying away a long time.” While I am thankful for the mercy and long-suffering nature of our Lord, it won’t last forever, and “now is the day of salvation.”
Action: Today I will not put off until tomorrow what I can do today. I will stop putting off the steps I need to take to address sin in my life, and join Jesus on His mission.
