Matthew 24:36-44

March 17, 2016 by Church Without Shoes

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Observation: Jesus is sharing about his return and He is saying that it will take place on an ordinary day and we will be going about our ordinary responsibilities, like with Noah and the flood. Jesus doesn’t even know the exact day or time, and there won’t be much warning, so we are just to be prepared. What does it mean to be ready? Tomorrow’s text on the faithful and wise servant will help, but for today…

Action: Lord, help me to believe this truth deeply, that You are coming back and it could be today. Help me to live that out. If today was my last day on earth, who would I spend time with? What conversations would I have and with whom? Help me to prioritize my days and how I spend my time around the things that matter to You!

Observation: Jesus tells us to watch, by which He means not watch for signs but watch ourselves, being sure we are being what God calls us to be.

Action: Lord Jesus, I will watch myself today. I will examine my actions and motives, my thoughts and speech. I will avoid that which is not of You, of which I will be ashamed when You come.

Observation: Be ready. Lord I want You to come and yet I grieve deeply for all that don’t know You yet that would be left behind. If it grieves my heart, it must break Yours to see that which You created and love not responding to Your invitation.
Action: Be ready-to live and love like Jesus. Be ready-to share my story of forgiveness and freedom. Be ready-to be still before You SO THAT I can hear You. Be ready-to invite others into Your family.
