Believe Without Seeing

March 31, 2013 by Church Without Shoes

GOOD NEWS ABOUT THE REALITY OF THE RESURRECTION

John 20:24-31 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

PERCEPTION // What I see/hear God saying/doing:
Jesus, You met disbelieving followers with undeniable evidence for their faith development, even though physical proof was not essential for courageous faith. Apparently, You especially affirm and reward those who believe without seeing.

PLAN // What I am going to do about it:
A few areas that challenge my wholehearted believing in Jesus are: the apparent delay in healing my son, the apparent delay of inner transformation of my signature sin, and the apparent delay of Kingdom breakthrough in our Diablo Valley. I will lift each of these believing-dilemmas to you in prayer this week trusting you will increase my faith.

PRAYER // Seal the deal:
Jesus, I want to believe (even if there is no tangible change), help me overcome my challenges of unbelief!

GOOD NEWS ABOUT THE CROSS

John 19:23-30 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, “They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.” So this is what the soldiers did. Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

PERCEPTION // What I see/hear God saying/doing:
Father, what I see You saying is that in light of the cross, there are people who are my family beyond biology, and they should be included in those who gather in my home as family.

PLAN // What I am going to do about it:
In the coming week, I am going to find ways to tell my family how much I care about them and how important they are to me (express my gratitude). I am going to tell people who are my extended family that that’s how I regard them.

PRAYER // Seal the deal:
Father, in the same way I am always giving You thanks and praise, let me always express my gratitude to those whom You have given me as family – both biological and spiritual. In Jesus’ name and for His sake, Amen.

The Weight Of Sin

GOOD NEWS ABOUT THE CROSS

John 19:31-37 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”

PERCEPTION // What I see/hear God saying/doing:
Father, I hear that the weight of my sin sped Christ’s death on the cross.

PLAN // What I am going to do about it:
Father, this week I will have my morning devotions with a crucifix before me and ask for Your help to lead me away from all temptations.

PRAYER // Seal the deal:
Father, help me resist every temptation to wander off Your path of life. Amen.
