GOOD NEWS ABOUT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
1 John 2:12-17 I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name . . . I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. . . . The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

PERCEPTION // What I see/hear God saying/doing:
I’m laid low and lifted high by the first line — “your sins have been forgiven.” God, is it possible You are this good?! My sins are many and they stink to high heaven. You know me, inside and out. I’m paralyzed (even if I appear to be functioning) if I’m still bearing this unbearable burden. I hate my own corruption. The relief I feel, the gratitude I owe You, is beyond words. If I’m forgiven of all that, then I can be that “father” who releases others.
PLAN // What I am going to do about it:
I am currently mentoring four young men who need to hear an authentic confession from a man (men don’t like to admit we’re wrong). They will hear mine this week, and, with the confidence that our God is radically forgiving and generously restoring, I will press them to do the same. I have some serious sins to confess (and so do they, I imagine) and the freedom of full forgiveness to experience.
PRAYER // Seal the deal:
My God, assure me of Your full forgiveness — and use me mightily to bless and build up the next generation.

Doug,
Good word on this verse. I’m convinced, the further I move into discipleship with guys, that they need to hear our story, over and over again. The fact that God has lifted us from the muck and mire, and that we have that story to share, is essential to our ability to become a “father” to others.
Doug, it was 20 years ago when you were at Hillside that you invested in my life to come out to the east bay and start ministry. Thanks for your discipling in my life. Now Stav who has been at Shelter and in my life for over 15 years is leading his own house church and making disciples and responding to your comments. This is TRUELY the will of God being lived out in real life. I love you both, What a kick in the pants.

That’s is a near perfect soap, Heather. You have indeed grown in the short time that I have known you. I am very thankful that our walks have crossed paths.
Thanks Marty!
Nuff said eh?
PERCEPTION // What I see/hear God saying/doing
I’ve had the chance to see God active in my life and lives around me for 40+ years. I know that God is calling me to be a father to young leaders and musicians. I need to be able to tell the stories and help apply them to their lives. I need to not turn our like my grandparents who always said “That’s old stuff from the past, why do you want to hear about that?”
PLAN // What I am going to do about it.
I’m going to discipline myself to write the stories and be ready to tell them at a moment’s notice. Writing makes it easier for me to remember the important points and gives me some time to reflect on what God was saying at the time.
PRAYER // Seal the deal.
Lord, increase my ability, through inspiration and practice, to verbally share Your stories to mentor others.
I made up for it by posting twice on my next try. Guess I can’t brag about being tech savvy today. (:-0
Knowing His love fills me with joy through His Holy Spirit within me.
Sean, I love your comment. Three generations. As sinful as we are, as much as we miss the mark over and over, as lazy as we can get (thinking specifically of me not you
) God still does amazing things through us and with us. And I love the connect the dots, generations of disciples that have come from the obedience you and Doug chose. And that of so many others in our valley and around the world. The gospel lives and moves on.
