Mark 1:17-18: Jesus said to them, come follow me, and I will make you fish for people. So Simon and Andrew immediately left their nets and followed him.
What we see from Jesus Christ is an invitation – an invitation to experiment with a new life, a journey that would change them completely. They were being taken to places to experiment God’s power.
Jesus said come follow me and I will make you fish for people. I believe the Lord was saying follow me and I will make you a rescuer. I will give true meaning to your life. No longer will you exist, but you will have life – fulfilling your purpose. Being changed as you see God in action, reaching out to the lost, rescuing the hopeless, and bringing hope into their lives.
As He did these great acts of compassion, the disciples’ faith was growing until they would say as the prophet Isaiah tells the Lord in Isaiah 6 “here I am Lord send me.” I believe that they were being called for training – saying you will be my representatives, you will learn to fish for people. You will see their condition and receive authority and power to help them. I will train you, I will equip you. So when I leave the things that I did, you can do them also – and even greater.
I believe God chose people like the disciples to prove to us that if He changed these men from being fearful, weak, and confused into these men of faith, courageous and bold to the point of giving their lives for the sake of the gospel, He will do the same with us. As we answer to God’s call on a daily basis, we will be equipped as we let his spirit guide us. He will give us His wisdom and show us His purpose for our lives as Paul said in Rom 8:30 God has a destiny of glory for us.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for we believe that you are calling us today to follow you. We pray that as the disciples dropped their nets and followed you, we will do the same. Amen
It is inspiring to reflect on the calling of those first followers. How God prepared them and equipped them outside of their natural abilities. And “He will do the same with us.” Thanks Rodrigo for your encouragement on God’s daily calling into our lives!
God so loves us that when He calls us to love and serve others, He not only leads the way but molds us to be more like Jesus in the process. Thank you for reminding us of His never ending love.
I had an experience today in the “fishing for people” catagory that I didn’t expect. I called a woman that I know slightly, to say I couldn’t come to a meeting. She knows I am a Christian but she is not. All of a sudden she brought up the subject of angels…It took me by surprise. We ended up having quite a long conversation about them and I felt that God was making an inroad for further discussion that could perhaps lead to talking about Christ. You never know when God will hand you a “fishing Line”!
Love it Cathy!
You nailed it Pastor Rodrigo – way to go!
