Luke 4:1-2 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit to go out into the wilderness, 2 where the Devil tempted him for forty days. He ate nothing all that time and was very hungry
In Luke Chapter 3, Jesus comes to John the Baptist to be baptized. It was for Jesus, a way to publically declare that He was accepting His Father’s assignment to be Israel’s Messiah. A huge challenge! Whenever a child of God steps forward to accept a Kingdom challenge we can expect two things: 1. God will prepare us; 2. The devil will tempt us.
Here Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert. Throughout the Bible the desert is God’s “Boot Camp” – the place where He prepares His people for the task ahead. He did that with Moses, Israel (after Egypt before the Promise Land), Elijah, and Hosea. We need to remember when we go through “desert” periods in our life that God can use them powerfully to prepare us for our next Kingdom assignment if we cooperate with His training plan.
Then Jesus was tempted by the devil – tempted to use His power selfishly – tempted to take some huge ministry shortcuts. But praise God He resisted by using scriptures. When we step forward spiritually, whether it’s for personal growth (decide to study the Bible or pray more) or to work for Christ’s Kingdom, we need to expect the temptations to hit us. But don’t worry, we won’t be tempted beyond what we can bear (I Cor. 10:13) and Christ Jesus will help us overcome (John 16:33). Trust in God and His spirit will see you through.
Prayer: Lord, fill us with your Holy Spirit so we can complete our Kingdom assignment for today. Amen
