Luke 4:4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People need more than bread for their life.'”
Satan is challenging Jesus about who He is. This encounter with Satan has everything to do with who Jesus is as the Son of God. Why is this such a big temptation? Because, He can turn rocks into bread. That is the point. The challenge for you and I as it is with Jesus is around our appetites. We live in America. We can have whatever we want when we want. Why don’t we believe the scripture today about people needing more than bread for their life? Unlike Jesus we don’t really believe who we are. Our identity as God’s children is not the driving source of substance for our life. Our ability to be obedient comes from knowing we are Gods beloved sons and daughters and as his kids, I want to live as a child of the King.
It goes something like this. I say, “God this is bread.” God says, “no my son that is a rock”. Sean, “No, this is bread I really know this is bread.” God, “Sean that is a rock, don’t eat that it won’t be good for you.” Sean, “I’m eating it, it’s bread.” Sean, “God why did you give me this rock.” My appetites are boundless and then when it doesn’t work out I blame God for my own disobedience. I am crazy.
Where is God speaking to you about Him being your only source of substance and life? He will challenge you until you are able to submit to Him alone as Jesus submitted to the Father in all things. This is the deep spiritual battle we must all face if we are to be given authority and power as God’s children.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we are so thankful for the spiritual sustenance You provide. When we are faced with a spiritual battle, may we use the power and authority You have given us to overcome. Amen!
