John 1:29-31 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Soon a man is coming who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before I did.’ 31 I didn’t know he was the one, but I have been baptizing with water in order to point him out to Israel
In this scripture there are so many things happening all at once. We see Jesus being obedient to the Father by coming to be baptized; John as a witness to Jesus’ “place” as well as proclaiming Jesus’ mission; experiencing a prophecy coming to fruition; recognizing Jesus’ deity ; recognizing a cousin who is more than an earthly relative . Each of these elements are, important and significant – and good to know. But where is the application for me as a believer in this? We find it in the very last part of verse 31:
“…but I have been baptizing with water in order to point Him out…”
John understood that there was one overriding mission, one most important purpose, one reason for lifelong service that God had reserved especially for him. Oh sure, there were many little, and important reasons he did along the way, but there was one thing God had in store for the life of John the Baptist. It was so important that Isaiah 40:3 prophesied it hundreds of years before the event.
In John’s case it was clear to him what it was he was waiting to do for God. He was in such a close relationship with the Father that the moment he laid on Jesus coming to him to be baptized, he knew – that was IT!
We all have an “IT” in our lives. Do you know yours? If you don’t, have you asked God about IT? If you do, did you have the courage to do IT? No one knows but you.
Prayer: Dear Father, help us to discern what the IT in our lives is. Help us to be obedient and seek to fulfill Your Will for this day.
