How many other mothers did you warn
as Herod’s seething neared its rupture mount?
Could it have been, on that fateful morn-
ing soldiers rode into an emptied town?
That You would warn One is right and He
should be rescued Who would rescue all.
Could not others latch to His release
and find escape as well from Ramah’s mauling?
Who can fathom by what laws You choose
to bind Yourself a free world to afford.
But this I know Your mercy still includes
the ones who must wake up to Herod’s sword.
